Is it possible to use a hierarchy tree to filter the displayed collection instead of showing the item form for the selected level?

Hello Luc,
yes, it is possible. The displayed screen near the hierarchy tree corresponds to the defined Business View, which has Browsing Form defined. This Form can contain in its first Tab an Embedded Collection that points to the desired child entity. This will display a collection of children, based on the selected record in the tree, like this :
This can be done for all transitions of the business view. Here are some screenshots of the configuration in case it helps :
