Is it possible to import a 5.1 model into a newly migrated 5.3 repository? is there any preparation we need to do?

Models can only be imported on the same version of xDM. If your model version is 5.1, you can import the model into a 5.1 environment and then upgrade xDM to 5.3. Once xDM is upgraded, the model will also be upgraded to 5.3.
