You should rely on the database backup capabilities to backup the repository or data location information.
If you're looking for something more sophisticated, xDM supports natively the historization of golden and master data to give you access to the data hub as it was in the past. This feature is useful for business reasons, to track data change history, but not for disaster/recovery purposes.
